Howie Mandel discusses mental health struggles during pandemic
Comedian and “America’s Got Talent” host Howie Mandel revealed that his mental health struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic nearly proved fatal. Speaking on Hoda Kotb’s “Joy 101” podcast, the 70-year-old discussed how his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and ADHD became increasingly difficult to manage during the global health crisis.
Mandel, who identifies as a germaphobe, explained that the pandemic exacerbated his anxiety and insomnia. To cope with the inability to sleep and recurring dark thoughts, he began self-medicating with cannabis products, alcohol, and other substances. He noted that there were moments when his wife, Teri, feared he might need hospitalization because he could not be woken up.
Mandel stated that he is now sober and manages his condition through professional psychotherapy and prescribed medication. He credited his wife for insisting he seek professional help during his most difficult period.
