Howie Rose honored with namesake service dog training at Citi Field

Longtime New York Mets radio broadcaster Howie Rose is being honored through a service dog training program at Citi Field. A four-month-old yellow Labrador, named after the sportscaster, is currently undergoing training at the stadium to prepare for a future role assisting veterans.

The program is a partnership between America’s VetDogs and the Amazin’ Mets Foundation. This puppy is the fourth in the initiative, following previous dogs named Shea, Seaver, and Buddy. The training at Citi Field allows the dog to become accustomed to loud noises, bright lights, and large crowds, ensuring the animal is prepared for the environments of its future owners.

In addition to stadium exposure, the dog will undergo three months of specialized training to master 30 different tasks, including medical episode detection and assisting owners during nightmares. Rose, who is retiring from broadcasting in September, expressed that the tribute is one of his highest honors, noting the loyalty shared between service dogs and veterans.
