Howrah prepares for municipal elections and road repairs
Administrative and infrastructure preparations are underway in Howrah ahead of the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections and the Durga Puja festival.
District Magistrate and Election Officer P. Deepap Priya has released a draft list regarding ward reservations. The number of wards in the Howrah Municipal Corporation has been increased from 50 to 68. Under the new structure, 23 wards have been reserved for women, including specific provisions for Scheduled Caste women. Political parties have until September 30 to submit suggestions regarding the draft list. Additionally, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have begun arriving at the Dumurjila Indoor Stadium.
In a separate development, Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul announced an allocation of 125 crore rupees to repair 100 dilapidated roads in Howrah. The project aims to complete repairs by October 10, before Mahalaya. Paul noted that the lack of recent municipal elections has contributed to the decline in civic services and stated that elections would be held soon under the current administration.
