HP Mostar to issue stamps marking 950th anniversary of King Zvonimir’s coronation

HP Mostar will issue commemorative postage stamps to mark the 950th anniversary of the coronation of Croatian King Dmitar Zvonimir. The stamps, featuring artwork by Ernesto Markota, are scheduled for release on October 8, 2026.

King Zvonimir was crowned on October 8, 1076, at the Basilica of St. Peter and Moses in Solin. The ceremony, conducted by papal legate Abbot Gebizon, followed Zvonimir’s oath of loyalty to Pope Gregory VII. This event secured a political and defensive alliance with the Holy See and provided legal recognition of the Kingdom of Croatia as a peer to other European nations.

Zvonimir’s reign was characterized by economic and cultural growth. Notable historical legacies include the construction of a basilica in Biskupija near Knin and the Baška Tablet, a significant Glagolitic inscription on the island of Krk. The king died in the first half of 1089 and was eventually moved to Solin for burial. The stamp issue will include an eight-stamp sheet, a first-day envelope, and a special postmark.
