HPV-related cancer prevention highlights role of oral health professionals

A new white paper from the FDI highlights the critical role of oral health professionals in preventing cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In several regions, including the USA and UK, HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma has become a leading HPV-associated cancer, surpassing cervical cancer. Despite this, only 12.9% of countries with HPV prevention policies have integrated oral health services into their programs.

Oral health professionals are positioned to support vaccination efforts, provide information, and identify suspicious findings. However, challenges such as lack of confidence and discomfort discussing HPV-related topics currently limit their involvement.

Additionally, research into anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) confirms that persistent infection by high-risk HPV serotypes is the primary risk factor for anal intraepithelial neoplasia and anal cancer. The incidence is particularly high among individuals with HIV and men who have sex with men. Studies suggest that a history of HPV-associated gynecological neoplasms in women also increases the likelihood of anal contamination.
