HR Leaders Face Office Maintenance and Remote Work Compliance Issues

Return‑to‑office plans are increasingly running into hidden problems with the physical condition of corporate office buildings. After years of reduced occupancy, many facilities have deferred maintenance on HVAC systems, plumbing, and overall building integrity, creating indoor air‑quality concerns that HR teams often discover only when employees return. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that such conditions arise from a partnership breakdown between building managers and occupants, especially when occupancy drops and budgets are cut.

In Hong Kong, employers must revise remote‑work policies to meet the Employment Ordinance, which will be fully enforceable from 2026. The law requires clear definitions of working hours, overtime, rest days, data‑privacy protections, workplace‑injury coverage, mandatory MPF contributions, and termination clauses. Companies that use generic overseas templates risk violations and possible labour‑tribunal claims, prompting a six‑step compliance guide for local businesses.
