North Macedonia seeks merit-based EU integration
North Macedonian officials are emphasizing the country's commitment to European Union integration, advocating for a process based on merit rather than historical disputes. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated that the country already meets two of the three conditions for gradual integration, including alignment with the EU's common foreign and security policy. He noted that the European Commission has recognized the issue of certain member states using vetoes for non-expansion-related bilateral matters.
Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski, speaking at a meeting in Sofia, reiterated that North Macedonia seeks full membership based on achievements and will continue to act in accordance with international law. He emphasized that while the country is proactive in finding solutions to bilateral issues, the final decision rests with EU member states.
However, some analysts, such as Emil Kirjas, suggest that the country is not yet fully prepared for negotiations due to internal challenges regarding the rule of law, corruption, and institutional reform. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mickoski has also addressed domestic political tension, dismissing opposition claims that the government is stalling the EU process and asserting that existing institutions are capable of conducting official vetting of public officials.
