Hürtgenwald forest fire likely caused by external influence

Investigators believe the devastating Hürtgenwald forest fire in the Eifel region was caused by external influence. The Aachen Public Prosecutor's Office stated that the fire, which broke out on August 13, is considered one of the largest forest fires in the history of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Authorities have identified two independent points of origin that share both a temporal and spatial connection. While investigators have ruled out World War II ammunition as a cause, they have not yet determined if the fire was started intentionally or through negligence. For one of the ignition points, investigators have ruled out objects being thrown from vehicles due to the steep terrain and lack of nearby roads.

To date, 177 tips have been received, though none have provided significant investigative leads. Additionally, the analysis of mobile cell tower data has been completed without yielding relevant information. The investigation against unknown perpetrators remains ongoing.
