Hürtgenwald forest fire triggers evacuations and massive emergency response

Emergency services are battling a large-scale forest fire in the Hürtgenwald region of Germany. Approximately 1,800 personnel, including firefighters, police, the Bundeswehr, and various aid organizations, are deployed to manage the blaze. While authorities in the Düren district expressed cautious optimism as the fire did not expand significantly overnight, the flames are not yet fully under control.

At one point, roughly 300 hectares of forest were ablaze. Efforts to contain the fire include the use of helicopters for aerial water drops, the creation of firebreaks by Bundeswehr vehicles, and assistance from local farmers and volunteers.

The district of Gey remains under evacuation orders after flames approached within a few hundred meters of the area, prompting the clearing of homes and a local nursing home. Residents are currently being supported at a school in Düren, and it remains uncertain when they will be permitted to return. Local infrastructure, including the B399 road and certain A4 motorway exits, remains restricted to facilitate emergency access.
