Hrvatske vode proposes 18km flood defense system along Plitvica

Hrvatske vode has submitted a request for a building permit to construct an 18-kilometer flood defense system along the right bank of the Plitvica river. The project spans from Zagrebačka Street in Varaždin to Vrbanovac.

The defense system will primarily consist of an earthen levee, though more complex technical solutions such as gabion structures and reinforced concrete walls will be used in space-constrained areas. The project also includes 20 culverts at Plitvica tributaries and collection channels to maintain the existing surface water network. Construction is estimated to require approximately 85,000 cubic meters of material.

The primary goal is to increase the safety of the population, settlements, agricultural land, and infrastructure from major flooding. Additionally, authorities are exploring the possibility of developing pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along parts of the levee to connect existing and planned recreational paths within Varaždin County.
