HS2 installs underground plaque honoring Brunel family

HS2 Ltd has installed a commemorative plaque 40 metres underground to mark where the Euston Tunnel passes beneath the Brunel family tomb in Kensal Green Cemetery. The marker honors one of history’s most significant engineering dynasties, including Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and his son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Sir Marc Brunel is credited with inventing the tunnel shield method in 1818, a technology that paved the way for the Thames Tunnel and remains the fundamental basis for the modern tunnel boring machines currently constructing the HS2 line. Isambard Kingdom Brunel is renowned for his work on the Great Western Railway, including the Box Tunnel, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

HS2 Ltd Chief Executive Mark Wild noted that the engineering achievements of the Brunels are foundational to modern railway and tunnelling practices. The project team has implemented extensive monitoring and specialist assessments to ensure the protection of sensitive historic sites during construction.
