HSBC ends direct banking operations in South Africa
HSBC has concluded its direct banking operations in South Africa after the South African Reserve Bank withdrew authorization for its Johannesburg branch. The withdrawal, which took effect on September 18, 2026, marks the end of the bank’s three-decade presence in the country following its initial entry in 1995.
The exit follows a strategic decision announced in September 2024. To ensure continuity, parts of the business were transferred to local institutions. FirstRand’s Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) assumed HSBC’s corporate and investment banking business, including associated assets and liabilities. Additionally, Absa agreed to maintain client access to South African equities and securities-financing services.
HSBC’s departure included the closure of its private-banking representative office. The bank had primarily served multinational companies, institutional investors, and firms involved in cross-border trade and finance. Analysts suggest the retreat was driven by the competitive landscape in South Africa, which is dominated by established lenders such as Standard Bank, FirstRand, Absa, Nedbank, and Capitec.
