HSBC reports 32% jump in third-quarter pre-tax profits

HSBC Holdings reported a 32% increase in third-quarter pre-tax profits, reaching $9.6 billion. The growth was driven by higher interest income, a reduction in expected credit losses, and the absence of significant litigation provisions that had impacted the previous year's results.

Despite the profit surge, the bank's revenue of $18.6 billion fell short of analyst expectations, which had projected closer to $19 billion. The wealth management division also saw a slowdown, with revenue stagnating at $2.7 billion compared to double-digit growth in previous quarters.

In response to the results, HSBC approved an interim dividend of 10 cents per share and announced a new share buyback program of up to $1 billion. Following the announcement, HSBC shares experienced a decline, falling over 5% on the Hong Kong stock exchange as investors reacted to the revenue miss and cautious outlook.
