HSE Ireland launches RSV immunisation programme for infants
The HSE National Immunisation Office is implementing several vaccination programmes for the autumn and winter seasons. A primary focus is the RSV immunisation programme designed to protect eligible babies from respiratory syncytial virus, which can cause serious illness in infants. The use of Nirsevimab has been noted to reduce RSV-related hospital admissions in babies by approximately 80%.
Babies born between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027 will be offered immunisation in maternity hospitals where possible. Those born between 1 March and 31 August 2026 may receive the immunisation through participating GP practices. Additionally, the Laura Brennan HPV Vaccine Catch-Up Programme is continuing its next phase of protection.
Health experts also emphasize that seasonal illness prevention involves lifestyle factors such as nutrition, hydration, quality sleep, and stress management to support immune function during colder months.
