Hsinchu County student dies in school basketball hoop accident

A junior high school student in Hsinchu County has died following a tragic accident in a school gymnasium. The student, a member of the school basketball team, was assisting with the folding of a mobile basketball frame around 3:00 PM on August 20.

Preliminary reports suggest the basketball hoop may have collapsed due to a failure in its hydraulic system. The student was unable to dodge the falling equipment and sustained severe injuries to the chest. Despite being rushed to Taipei Veterans General Hospital Hsinchu Branch for emergency treatment, the student was pronounced dead.

The Hsinchu County Government Education Bureau and school officials have activated emergency response mechanisms, providing counseling and psychological support to students and teachers who witnessed the event. Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine if there was any negligence that could lead to criminal liability.
