HSL-Zuid rail repairs to be more extensive and lengthy

The repair program for the HSL-Zuid high-speed rail line in the Netherlands has been revealed to be more extensive and complex than previously estimated. ProRail, commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, is tasked with repairing structural defects on ten viaducts between the Groene Hart Tunnel and Hoofddorp.

Significant disruptions are expected due to the technical challenges involved. The Zuidweg Viaduct near Rijpwetering requires major modifications to its foundations and load-bearing components rather than simple repairs. Because many construction sites are difficult to access, much of the concrete must be poured on-site rather than using prefabricated parts.

ProRail has announced two major service suspensions. Starting around September 4, 2028, the section between Hoofddorp and Rotterdam is expected to be closed for 112 days. A second closure of 50 days is planned for 2029 to address the Zuidweg Viaduct. Additionally, several extended weekends in 2029 will be required for work on other viaducts. These closures will impact international connections between cities such as Amsterdam, Schiphol, Rotterdam, and Breda, linking to destinations including Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, and London.
