Hässleholm care home neglect: Elderly woman left with untreated hip fracture
An elderly woman at a care facility in Hässleholm, Sweden, lived with an untreated hip fracture for nearly three days after her reports of a fall were dismissed by staff due to her dementia diagnosis.
During the period, the woman experienced severe pain and visible bruising. Rather than investigating the cause of the injury, staff treated the symptoms with morphine and sedatives, which led to further complications such as constipation and urinary issues. The fracture was only discovered when a nurse noticed the patient's leg was rotated outward after a catheter failed to function.
This incident is part of a series of reported irregularities at the Björksäter care home, which has seen five Lex Maria reports and 13 Lex Sarah reports filed over a two-year period.
