Mario Vušković returns to Hamburger SV training after four-year ban

Croatian defender Mario Vušković has returned to training with Hamburger SV following a nearly four-year suspension for doping. The 24-year-old center-back, who tested positive for EPO in September 2022, was welcomed back by approximately 7,000 fans at the Volksparkstadion, a venue chosen by the club to accommodate the high public interest in his return.

While Vušković is permitted to participate in team training sessions immediately, he remains ineligible for official competitive matches until November 15, 2026. During his absence, the club maintained support for the player, even extending his contract through a special arrangement to ensure his return to the squad.

HSV coach Merlin Polzin noted that while the return is a significant emotional moment for the player and the club, the focus will be on gradually reintegrating Vušković into the team's physical and tactical routines. The player has been working individually with Joško Vlašić to maintain fitness during his ban.
