HTW Saar tests hydrogen-powered energy system for mobile masts
Researchers at HTW Saar in Saarland are testing a new energy container designed to keep mobile phone masts operational during extended power outages. The project, funded significantly by Vantage Towers, aims to ensure that communication networks, including emergency services radio, can function autonomously for at least 72 hours.
The system combines several technologies: a hydrogen motor, batteries, and photovoltaic solar panels. This approach addresses the limitations of current battery backups, which often only provide about 30 minutes of power during a blackout. The necessity for such a solution was highlighted by past incidents, such as the 2021 Ahrtal flood and a 2026 power outage in Berlin, where communication networks failed when the electricity grid went down.
By integrating solar power to relieve the generator and using hydrogen as a long-term energy source, the research team hopes to provide a resilient solution for critical infrastructure during extreme crisis scenarios.
