Huang Qiufan, former Chongqing mayor, placed under investigation

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced on October 13, 2026, that Huang Qiufan, the former mayor of Chongqing and a prominent economic figure, is under investigation for “serious violations of discipline and law.”

Known as the “indestructible official” for surviving the political falls of former Chongqing leaders Bo Xilai and Sun Zhengcai, Huang’s investigation follows the sudden cancellation of a scheduled speaking engagement in Hangzhou. His career is marked by significant roles in the development of Shanghai’s Pudong New Area and the implementation of the “city investment platform” model in Chongqing, which earned him the nickname “Chongqing’s God of Wealth.”

Speculation regarding the investigation includes potential links to family corruption, financial irregularities involving his son, and connections to recent crackdowns on financial officials and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, where Huang served as vice chairman. Some analysts suggest his high-profile public appearances as an economic commentator may have also contributed to his downfall.
