Huanggang Port reopens to streamline Shenzhen-Hong Kong border travel
The newly reconstructed Huanggang Port officially opened on October 12, replacing the Lok Ma Chau Control Point that had served the region for 37 years. Located between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the facility is now the world’s largest single-building land port complex, covering approximately 689,700 square meters.
The port utilizes a “co-location” system for collaborative inspection and joint customs clearance. This allows travelers to complete immigration checks for both Hong Kong and Shenzhen in a single queue, reducing processing times from approximately 30 minutes to about 5 minutes. The facility is designed to handle an initial daily flow of 200,000 passengers, with capacity expected to rise to 300,000 following the future launch of the MTR Northern Link Spur Line.
Infrastructure includes 134 automated collaborative inspection lanes and 68 traditional manual counters. For vehicles, a “five-in-one” joint inspection channel has been introduced, allowing Shenzhen and Hong Kong authorities to conduct simultaneous checks, reducing vehicle clearance times from 10 minutes to roughly 2 minutes. Officials noted that the first day of operation proceeded smoothly, with measures in place to manage high passenger volumes during upcoming holidays.
