Huanggang Tunnel opens under Yellow River in Jinan

The Huanggang Tunnel, a massive 5.755 km underwater structure, has officially opened under the Yellow River in Jinan, Shandong Province. The tunnel features a unique double-deck design with six lanes total, housed within a single large circular tube. The upper deck contains three lanes for northbound traffic, while the lower deck contains three lanes for southbound traffic.

This project marks a significant engineering milestone as the world’s largest diameter shield-driven underwater tunnel. It utilizes the Shanhe tunnel boring machine, which reached a diameter of 17.5 meters during construction. The tunnel is expected to drastically reduce travel times between Jinan’s main urban area and the northern development zone, cutting a journey that previously took 30 to 40 minutes via bridges down to approximately 5 minutes.

Construction involved land acquisitions in several areas, including Wangjiazhen, Daqiao, Zhangzhuang, and Yangjuan, to support the necessary infrastructure. The tunnel is designed for a speed of 60 km/h and provides sufficient clearance for buses, fire trucks, and emergency vehicles.
