Black students disproportionately targeted by AI cheating accusations

A study by the nonprofit Common Sense Media has revealed that Black students are disproportionately targeted by AI-driven plagiarism detection tools. According to the findings, Black students are more than twice as likely as their white or Hispanic peers to have their writing incorrectly flagged as AI-generated content.

While approximately 10 percent of all teenagers reported having their work inaccurately identified as AI-generated, the rate for Black teens rises to 20 percent. This trend highlights ongoing concerns regarding racial bias and the weaponization of artificial intelligence in educational and law enforcement settings.
