Huawei announces global rollout of HarmonyOS
Huawei has announced the international rollout of its HarmonyOS operating system, aiming to complete a global launch by the end of 2026. Following successful adoption in China, the company is initiating pilot programs in selected countries to prepare for expansion.
As of late August 2026, HarmonyOS is running on over 80 million devices, marking an increase of 10 million units since June 2026. With an average of 170,000 new activations per day, Huawei expects to exceed 100 million devices by the fourth quarter of 2026. Data from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicates that HarmonyOS has become the third-largest mobile operating system globally, holding a 24% market share in China, surpassing iOS.
The ecosystem extends beyond smartphones and tablets to include vehicles and smart home devices, supported by over 100,000 native applications. However, the global expansion faces potential challenges, including regulatory scrutiny and security concerns raised by U.S. politicians regarding surveillance risks.
