Apple and Samsung dominate 2026 Q2 smartphone market as Huawei announces Mate XT 2 launch

In the second quarter of 2026, the global smartphone market contracted by 11%, yet market concentration among top players increased. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple and Samsung dominated the landscape, with each brand securing five of the top ten best-selling models. Together, these ten models accounted for 26% of global sales. The iPhone 17 emerged as the world's most popular smartphone, capturing 6% of the market, followed by the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro.

On the Android side, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra was the top-selling model, marking a significant milestone as the first ultra-premium Android device to lead Android sales in a June quarter. Samsung's Galaxy A series also maintained a strong presence in the top ten due to its competitive pricing and long-term software support.

Separately, Huawei has officially scheduled a major product launch for September 7 at 14:30. The event is expected to feature the debut of the Mate XT 2, a new tri-fold smartphone, alongside the official release of HarmonyOS 7. Rumors regarding the Mate XT 2 suggest it may utilize a new U-shaped or G-shaped inward-folding mechanism to enhance screen durability, potentially featuring a Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and a battery capacity exceeding 6,000 mAh.
