Huawei faces federal trial over allegations of trade secret theft

A federal trial has commenced in Brooklyn against the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, with U.S. prosecutors alleging a decades-long pattern of theft, lies, and concealment. The Department of Justice claims Huawei built its global empire by victimizing American companies and abusing the U.S. financial system to gain an unfair competitive advantage.

Central to the prosecution's case is the alleged theft of intellectual property from several major firms, including Cisco Systems, Motorola Solutions, Fujitsu, Quintel Technology, T-Mobile, and CNEX Labs. Specific evidence presented includes the theft of Cisco's router operating system source code and T-Mobile’s “Tappy” robotic testing device. FBI testimony and surveillance footage reportedly show Huawei employees improperly accessing and removing components of the T-Mobile robot.

Huawei faces 12 counts, including conspiracy to commit racketeering, conspiracy to steal trade secrets, bank and wire fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. The company has pleaded not guilty, with defense attorneys arguing that the prosecution is attempting to frame routine global business interactions and isolated misconduct by individual employees as an organized criminal enterprise. The trial is expected to last approximately four months.
