Huawei MateBook Pro S privacy screen and Honor 700 rear display showcase Chinese tech innovations

Huawei has introduced a “Smart Shield Privacy Screen” on its MateBook Pro S laptop. The OLED panel dims or blacks out when viewed from an angle, can be activated via a software popup or a physical switch, and reportedly detects onlookers with the webcam. The two‑layer pixel design aims to keep brightness comparable to normal use, with peak HDR output of up to 1,600 nits. The device runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS, is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin XE90 processor, and is sold only in China for about 8,000 yuan (≈$1,185).

Separately, Honor is rumored to be testing a 1.7‑inch rear display for its upcoming 700 series smartphone, expanding on the magnetic secondary screen introduced in the recent Digital series. The larger back screen could serve for camera previews, quick notifications, or selfie framing, indicating a move from a novelty feature to a functional element in mid‑range phones.

Both developments illustrate Chinese manufacturers’ focus on novel display technologies to differentiate their laptops and smartphones in a competitive market.
