Huawei proposes AI data center in Egypt

Huawei has submitted a proposal to construct an artificial intelligence data center in Egypt, offering advanced computing infrastructure that could position the nation within the technological rivalry between China and the United States. The proposal includes the deployment of over 2,000 Huawei AI processors, specifically featuring 1,408 Ascend 950-series chips for an AI training cloud and approximately 600 additional processors for inference clusters.

The project aims to provide what Huawei describes as “sovereign AI infrastructure,” intended to support Egyptian government requirements, including military applications, surveillance, and public-sector services. This initiative aligns with Egypt's ambitions to localize digital infrastructure and establish itself as a technology hub connecting Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

If realized, the deal would represent a significant milestone as a potentially major overseas deployment of Huawei’s newest generation of AI accelerators, despite ongoing US restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports. The project highlights a shift in geopolitical competition toward the control of supply chains and computing resources.
