Huawei proposes rural connectivity solutions to Malawi regulator

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has engaged with Huawei to explore technology solutions aimed at expanding digital access in underserved rural communities. The discussions focused on addressing the significant gap between mobile broadband coverage and actual internet usage in Malawi, where mobile internet penetration is currently at 12.5%.

Huawe presented ‘Rural Link’, a compact telecommunications site that utilizes a pole-based structure instead of traditional towers. This system integrates solar power, radio equipment, microwave, and baseband technology to reduce deployment costs in areas where conventional infrastructure is not commercially viable.

To address the barrier of device affordability, Huawei also presented entry-level smartphones. The initiative seeks to ensure that increased network coverage translates into actual internet use, as approximately 90% of the Malawian population remains offline despite relatively high 3G and 4G coverage levels.
