Huawei sees HarmonyOS surpass iOS in China as Mate90 with new Kirin chip readies launch

Huawei's HarmonyOS has risen to a 17% share of the Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter of 2024, overtaking Apple's iOS, which fell to 16%, according to Counterpoint Research. This marks the first time the domestically developed operating system has become China’s second‑largest OS.

The company is also preparing to launch the Mate90 series, expected as early as September 2025. The new flagship will be the first to use the Kirin 2026 processor, built around Huawei’s internally devised “Tao Law” that focuses on architectural efficiency rather than pure process scaling. The devices will ship with HarmonyOS 7, extending the ecosystem across phones, tablets, PCs and vehicles.
