Huawei targets AI infrastructure leadership to rival Nvidia

Huawei is positioning itself to become a dominant provider of information and communications technology (ICT) and computing infrastructure, with leadership expressing ambitions to rival Nvidia in the AI sector. Huawei Supervisory Board Chairman Guo Ping stated that the company’s strategy focuses on connectivity and computing rather than developing its own large language models. Instead, Huawei aims to enable customers to build and run competitive models efficiently using its Ascend and Kunpeng processors, supernodes, and computing clusters.

To address the infrastructure needs of the AI era, Huawei has introduced several AI data center (DC) solutions designed to improve training and inference performance. During the HUAWEI CONNECT 2026 event, the company released the AI DC White Paper 2026 and showcased new pilot bases in Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Qingdao. These innovations target six key areas, including AI computing, general-purpose computing, storage, and network high availability.

Guo Ping noted that while China faces challenges in computing power compared to the United States, it maintains advantages in data applications and industrial use cases. To overcome semiconductor constraints, Huawei intends to integrate chip design and manufacturing more closely, utilizing architectural innovation to narrow the gap with global competitors.
