Germany considers Huawei ban as antenna networks are labeled critical infrastructure

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has introduced a proposal to classify the mobile antenna access network as critical infrastructure. This move establishes a legal basis for a potential ban on Huawei technology within Germany's 5G network.

Developed in collaboration with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, the draft identifies the antenna access network—including masts and transmission facilities—as a security risk due to potential third-state influence and attack vectors. This expansion of critical infrastructure status beyond the core network could allow the state to mandate the removal of Huawei equipment from thousands of mobile antennas used by major providers like Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica.

Separately, the InnoTrans 2026 exhibition in Berlin showcased significant advancements in the rail sector. Huawei unveiled its 'Intelligent RAIL 2.0' solutions, focusing on AI-driven automation and digital integration for construction, passenger/freight transport, and maintenance. Other exhibitors, including HIAROM, KRAUSE, and Kombud Group, presented specialized technical solutions ranging from maintenance access systems to railway automation and signaling technologies.
