Hubble Telescope captures giant superbubble in N44 nebula
The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a detailed new image of a giant “superbubble” within the N44 nebula, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud approximately 160,000 light-years from Earth. The central cavity of the nebula is a massive void measuring roughly 210 by 140 light-years.
Astronomers attribute the formation of this superbubble to the intense activity of massive stars. Powerful stellar winds and successive supernova explosions have pushed gas and dust outward, creating a dense, glowing shell around the central void. This process of stellar destruction simultaneously facilitates new life; the compressed gas within the shell has become dense enough to collapse, triggering the birth of new stars.
A Hubble observation program led by Dimitrios Gouliermis has cataloged approximately 500,000 stars in and around the region. This includes about 30,000 pre-main sequence stars that have not yet begun hydrogen fusion. The imagery also reveals smaller structures, such as N44F, a smaller bubble sculpted by the radiation and winds of a single hot, massive star.
