Novo Nordisk signs $1.3 billion deal with Nanexa for long-acting drug technology

Novo Nordisk has entered into a global exclusive licensing and collaboration agreement with Swedish biotech company Nanexa. The deal, which could reach a total value of approximately $1.33 billion (€1.165 billion), focuses on Nanexa’s PharmaShell drug-delivery technology.

PharmaShell utilizes atomic layer deposition (ALD) to apply an ultra-thin inorganic coating to individual drug particles. This technology is designed to regulate the release of active ingredients, enabling the development of long-acting injectable formulations. The collaboration aims to extend the dosing intervals for peptide-based medicines used in treating obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other cardiometabolic diseases, potentially moving from weekly injections to monthly or even quarterly administration.

The financial structure includes up to €615 million in upfront, development, and regulatory milestone payments, with additional payments tied to sales milestones and low single-digit royalties on future global net sales. Novo Nordisk will lead the global development and commercialization of the resulting products. Following the announcement, Nanexa’s shares surged by over 100% on the Stockholm exchange.
