Hubert Aiwanger slams Merz reform package, urges scrap of inheritance tax

Bavarian economics minister Hubert Aiwanger, leader of the Freie Wähler party, sharply criticised the reform package presented by the Merz‑led federal government, saying “Die kapieren es einfach nicht.” He argued the measures fall short of the tax relief needed to regain disappointed voters.

Aiwanger called for a “tax‑political breakthrough,” demanding the outright abolition of Germany’s inheritance tax. He said the tax discourages family businesses and that any revenue loss could be offset by future investment and higher tax receipts. He also proposed cutting wage continuation for sick employees from full pay to 70 % in the first days and offering a year‑end bonus for workers with few sick days.

While welcoming limited bureaucracy cuts, Aiwanger said the new rule requiring a medical certificate on the first day of illness and the removal of telephone sick notes are insufficient. He accused the SPD of blocking employer‑friendly reforms such as reduced waiting periods and cuts to continued pay.
