Hubertus Heil considers SPD leadership candidacy
SPD politician Hubertus Heil has expressed interest in running for the chairmanship of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in January, following the resignation of party leader Bärbel Bas. Heil stated that his decision to run will depend on the future direction of the party and the composition of the leadership team.
Heil emphasized the need for a clear course focused on what he calls a ‘solidary meritocracy,’ alongside stronger European sovereignty in economic and security policy. He also addressed his own communication style, noting that he has worked to move away from a ‘too bureaucratic’ approach to better convey personal conviction and passion.
While Heil has not officially announced his candidacy, he noted that he would decide based on whether he can contribute to a stronger party. Currently, potential contenders or allies for the position remain unclear, with speculation surrounding other figures such as Manuela Schwesig and the potential reelection of current chairman Lars Klingbeil.
