Hubertus Meyer-Burckhardt speaks on childhood abuse

German TV presenter and author Hubertus Meyer-Burckhardt has spoken publicly about experiencing ritualized physical abuse from his father during his childhood. In an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, the 70-year-old described how his father, who was heavily influenced by the Nazi era and served in the Wehrmacht, would use a riding whip to punish him.

Meyer-Burckhardt noted that he found solace and a sense of parental guidance through literature during his youth, which has led to the publication of a new book featuring the literary quotes that helped him cope. He emphasized the importance of discussing such experiences, stating, “There is no reason to endure that. There is no reason to arrange oneself with it,” and advocating for therapy or legal consequences for those who commit domestic violence.
