HubSpot and Other Chatbot Widgets Add Significant Load to Websites

Measurements of popular website chatbots show that the third‑party scripts they load can increase page weight dramatically. On a test page, HubSpot required 272 KB before the page rendered, Crisp 120 KB, while Tawk added no pre‑render load. Overall, total download size ranged from 6 KB to 502 KB, with up to 30 requests to 17 external domains. The study highlights that the real impact of a chatbot depends on how its snippet is designed – some widgets load everything immediately, others defer most assets until after the page is visible.

In customer‑service contexts, scripted chatbots follow predefined menus and work well for simple queries, but they struggle with varied or complex requests. Experts recommend a hybrid model where AI assists human agents by summarising, routing, and drafting responses, while humans provide judgment and empathy. This approach aims to combine speed with personalized service and requires clear data, validation, and transparency safeguards.
