Huddersfield Market Hall renovation begins in Yorkshire

Renovation and restoration work has commenced on the Grade II* listed Huddersfield Market Hall in West Yorkshire. The project, managed by contractor Willmott Dixon in partnership with Kirklees Council, aims to preserve the historic building's heritage while modernizing its facilities.

Key aspects of the restoration include structural repairs and the reinstatement of the building's original color scheme of reds, pinks, and creams to complement its decorative cast-iron frame and glass roof. To improve accessibility, the hall will be fitted with ramps, automatic doors, accessible toilets, and a new Changing Places facility.

The revamped market is expected to accommodate over 87 pitches, featuring 12 permanent stalls and more than 75 demountable stalls, which will be approximately 50 percent larger than current versions. The development also plans to introduce three hot food outlets, an enclosed heated café, and a small bar to support evening activities. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2028. A temporary market remains open to the public during the construction period.
