Huddersfield temporary market opens as historic hall renovation begins
A new temporary market in Huddersfield is set to open on 13 August, providing 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls, with additional space for up to 28 extra stalls on Byram Street on busy days. The site includes public and accessible toilets, a market office and other essential facilities, allowing traders to continue serving shoppers while the main market hall undergoes work.
The opening marks the start of a £16.5 million phase‑two restoration of the Grade II* listed Huddersfield Market Hall. Hoardings are being erected around the hall, and the works will repair the decorative cast‑iron frame and roof, restore the original colour scheme and improve accessibility with ramps, automatic doors and new changing‑places facilities. The renovated hall, slated to reopen in January 2028, will feature over 87 pitches, including larger permanent stalls. Funding for the project was secured from the UK Government in November 2023 and must be spent by March 2028.
