Hudson County officials rally for Polluters Pay Act

Elected officials, residents, and climate advocates in Hudson County held a rally to demand the passage of the ‘Polluters Pay to Make NJ More Affordable Act’. The proposed legislation seeks to require major fossil fuel extractors to fund infrastructure upgrades and climate resiliency efforts to protect communities from flooding and extreme heat.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon advocated for the bill, stating it would hold fossil fuel companies accountable and shift the financial burden of climate damage away from working families and municipalities. Proponents noted that extreme heat has already cost New Jersey an estimated $108 billion between 1991 and 2022, and that nearly 23% of property in Hudson County currently faces high flood risk.

The rally was met by a counter-protest from activists criticizing a potential 15.5 percent municipal tax hike. These protesters argued that the focus on state-level climate legislation served as a distraction from local budget concerns regarding an $886.5 million municipal budget.
