Hudson River rescue operation launched after person jumps from Bear Mountain Bridge

Emergency crews conducted a large-scale search and rescue operation in the Hudson River on Sunday night, September 13, 2026, after a person reportedly jumped from the Bear Mountain Bridge.

The response began around 8:34 p.m. when the Piermont Fire Department's Marine Unit and Dive Team were called to assist the Stony Point Fire Department. The operation involved a coordinated effort between marine units from Rockland, Orange, and Westchester Counties, including nine divers, two tenders, and six EMTs.

Due to an outgoing tide, search teams focused on the area just south of the bridge. The Piermont Dive Team eventually located the unidentified victim approximately 1.3 miles southwest of the bridge. Divers brought the individual aboard a marine unit, where EMTs performed CPR during transport to a pier at a state park on the Rockland County side of the river.
