Hue artisans preserve traditional lion dance head craft

In Hue, Vietnam, the traditional craft of making lion dance heads remains a vibrant part of the cultural landscape, particularly during the Mid-Autumn Festival. On Tran Hung Dao Street, artisans produce a wide variety of products ranging from small heads for children to elaborate, high-end pieces costing tens of millions of VND.

While traditional colors like red and gold—symbolizing luck and prosperity—remain popular, modern designs now feature a diverse palette including blue, orange, pink, and purple. Artisans emphasize that the eyes are the most critical element, as the specific way they are painted and shaped defines the unique expression and majesty of a Hue-style lion head.

This multi-generational craft supports many families in the region. Beyond local consumption, these handcrafted items are distributed to major Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, and are even exported abroad to serve the Vietnamese community overseas.
