Huelva drug raid ends in armed clash with traffickers

In the early hours of Thursday, civil guard units conducting an anti‑drug operation near Punta Umbría, Huelva, were fired upon by heavily armed traffickers transporting hashish. The gang opened fire with sub‑machine guns from a van loaded with about 56 bales (roughly 1,120 kg) of hash, but the agents, who took cover behind vehicles, escaped without injuries.

One suspect, a Spanish national of foreign origin, was arrested at the scene while the remaining traffickers fled, abandoning the load. The operation involved multiple police components, including maritime services, aerial units, canine teams and the judicial police. The Guardia Civil's union warned that such attacks are becoming frequent and urged stronger measures.

Authorities have opened an investigation to locate the other participants and have set up a perimeter to secure the area. The incident highlights rising drug‑trafficking activity along the Andalusian coast and the use of military‑grade weapons against law‑enforcement.
