Huelva migrant settlements face extreme vulnerability following fatal fires
In Huelva, Spain, a series of fires in migrant worker settlements has highlighted extreme housing vulnerability. A recent blaze in La Sevillana, Lucena del Puerto, resulted in the death of a 36-year-old Malian worker and affected more than 80 makeshift dwellings. The fire also caused minor injuries to four individuals.
This incident follows another fire in a different settlement in Lucena del Puerto just one week prior. Social organizations report that residents often lose all possessions, including clothing, documents, and mobile phones, leaving them entirely dependent on aid from entities such as Cruz Roja and Cáritas. Many displaced workers face the difficult choice of moving to other municipalities to find new employment and shelter.
