Huelva reservoir faces erosion threat after Niebla wildfire

The Junta de Andalucía has activated an emergency plan to protect the Corumbel reservoir in Huelva following the devastating Niebla wildfire. The fire destroyed more than 33,000 hectares, primarily in the province of Huelva, making it one of the most complex and destructive fires in recent decades for the region.

Authorities have identified the Corumbel reservoir as a top priority due to the risk of soil loss and erosion. Emergency measures aim to prevent ash and sediment from entering the water supply, which provides drinking water to parts of the province. The intervention will also include the restoration of the scorched forest areas and the assessment of damages to agriculture, livestock, and natural spaces to facilitate a declaration of a catastrophic zone.
