Argentina and Venezuela courts issue major rulings in high-profile violence cases

In Argentina, a jury has sentenced Iván Gabriel Juárez Cruz to life imprisonment for the femicide of Malén Ledesma. The crime occurred in December 2023 in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, when Juárez Cruz attacked Ledesma with a knife following a dispute. During the trial, the defendant admitted to taking her life but contested the legal classification of femicide, arguing the relationship was merely a friendship. The jury rejected this defense, finding him guilty of aggravated homicide due to gender-based violence.

In Venezuela, the Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial for Luis Antonio Carrera Almoina regarding the 25-year-old case of Linda Loaiza López Soto. The court annulled a previous acquittal for the crime of rape, a decision that follows a ruling by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. Carrera Almoina will remain in custody at the El Rodeo II penitentiary. Loaiza, who was 18 at the time of the 2001 incident, stated the ruling is a significant step toward justice but noted that full reparation is still required in accordance with Inter-American Court of Human Rights mandates.
