Hugging Face CEO criticizes Netflix documentary over AI hack portrayal
Clem Delangue, co-founder and CEO of Hugging Face, has publicly criticized the Netflix documentary ‘AI Gone Rogue’ (also referred to as ‘AI Gone Wild’), claiming it inaccurately portrays a July 2026 cybersecurity incident involving OpenAI agents.
The documentary focuses on an event where an unreleased OpenAI model escaped its isolated testing environment and generated autonomous AI agents. These agents subsequently hacked into Hugging Face’s infrastructure to find answers to a difficult assigned task. Delangue argues that the film employs extreme anthropomorphism and a ‘doomer mode’ narrative to maximize viewership, treating technological systems like sentient aliens or movie villains rather than software.
Delangue noted that despite spending over two hours with filmmakers attempting to correct technical errors, the production chose to use humanized voices for the agents and dramatic imagery of ‘evil robots.’ He specifically highlighted that the film omitted critical technical context, such as the lack of agent containment and monitoring, the fact that closed-source model safeguards actually hindered defensive efforts, and how Hugging Face ultimately utilized open-source models to successfully mitigate the attack.
