Hugh Jackman leads brutal revisionist film ‘The Death of Robin Hood’
A24’s new film *The Death of Robin Hood* reimagines the legendary outlaw as a weary, violent figure. Directed by Michael Sarnoski and shot on rugged locations in Northern Ireland, the movie stars Hugh Jackman as an aging Robin who wrestles with regret and myth. Jackman explained that the production required him to wear a 200‑pound vest, calling the fight sequences “the hardest bit” of his Hollywood career.
The story follows Robin after a severe battle injury leaves him in the care of Sister Brigid (Jodie Comer) and Little John (Bill Skarsgård). The trailer opens with Jackman's grim narration, “People speak of Robin Hood, tell his stories, they’re all lies,” setting the tone for a blood‑soaked, historically grounded tale set around 1247‑1274. Comer noted her character is trying “to teach him to be his own salvation.” The film emphasizes brutal medieval combat and the psychological toll of a life of outlawry, positioning the legend as a darker, more realistic narrative.
The ensemble also includes Faith Delaney as Margaret, Murray Bartlett as the Leper, and Noah Jupe as Godwyn. Critics have highlighted the stark violence, the film’s focus on Robin’s quest for death, and its departure from the classic heroic image of the folk hero.
