Hugo Broos to leave South Africa coach role after World Cup, remains until contract ends

The South African Football Association (SAFA) refuted early reports that coach Hugo Broos had already quit, stating the Belgian remained head coach of Bafana Bafana and was in Belgium with his family, due to return later in July. After leading South Africa to its first FIFA World Cup knockout stage and a third‑place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Broos confirmed he will step down when his five‑year contract expires at the end of July. He said his decision is “irreversible” and he will not return to daily coaching, though he is open to an advisory or scouting role with SAFA. SAFA confirmed discussions are under way about his future and about appointing a successor, with former national‑team boss Pitso Mosimane named among the candidates. Broos will travel back to South Africa at the end of July for a formal farewell and to hear any proposal from the federation.
